The biggest difference between good blackjack players and average blackjack players is that good blackjack players have the ability to shift the odds in their favor. In order to do so a player must be able to identify and take advantage of a good situation, such as doubling down when the right opportunity is available. Blackjack is a game of variable odds, however by following the strategy tables it is possible to take advantage of these fluctuations.
Doubling Down is the players option to increase their bet when they have a strong hand. Being given an option to increase a bet after the cards have been dealt is a very powerful means to shift the odds in favor of the player, unfortunately many players fail to see the great advantage of doubling down under the right circumstances. As mentioned in the basic strategies section of this site human nature is often a players own worst enemy, these type of players make the logical decision of reducing a possible loss as opposed to increasing their winnings. These players feel that being in a situation where a double down is recommended is good enough, why risk more? This may seem to be a good idea but it is mathematically incorrect and strengthens the casino’s advantage.
It is important to note that by not doubling down when it is recommended the player will win just as often, however the player will win less. In the game of blackjack the players option of doubling down is the best means of controlling the odds, therefor it is always recommended to double down whenever this option is suggested on the strategy tables.
